Sanjiaotang Fm

Period:
Mesoproterozoic

Age Interval:
Changchengian (Statherian) - Jixianian (Calymmian), Ch-Jx (21)

Province:
Henan

Type Locality and Naming

West Henan. The Sanjiaotang Fm was named by Han Yingshan, Li Shengsi and Yan Lianquan in 1952. The typical section is Sinian section in Sigou and Cuizhuang (Hongjian) in Ruyang County, Henan Province. Second (2/3) formation in Luoyu Gr.

Synonym: (三教堂组)

Lithology and Thickness

The Sanjiaotang Fm is a suite of quartzose sandstone, dominated by medium-grained quartzose sandstone, the lower part is intercalated with banded siltstone and fine quartzose sandstone (bearing ferruginous spots), and the top part is glauconitic sandstone, bearing ripple marks and rill marks ripples. The basal part consists of a bed of white siltstone and dark purple ribbon siltstone. The thickness varies from 52 to 96 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the underlying Cuizhuang Fm.

Upper contact

The top part (glauconitic quartzose sandstone) is conformably overlain by the Luoyukou Fm.

Regional extent

West Henan. The Sanjiaotang Formation is mainly distributed south of the line from Xin'an County to Sanmenxia City, and on the north, it is lacking. The formation is distributed in Mianchi (31 m), Ruyang (52-96 m), Wufoshan, Yanshi County (68 m), Xiaodingshan, Fangcheng (103 m), Wuyang (158 m thick).

Fossils

The Sanjiaotang Formation yields microplants Trematosphaeridium minutum, Polyporata obsoleta etc.

Age

The ages of glauconite by K-Ar method include 1071, 1078 and 1089 Ma. IC-P-MS U-Pb date on zircon is 1611±8 Ma from the overlying Luoyukou Fm (Su Wenbo et al., 2012). Schematic stratigraphic column shows as late Changchengian (late Statherian), and the 3 formations of this Luoyu Gr are given equal spans for the graphics.
